Victorian "Touch Not the Cat" Signet Ring
Clan Macpherson in 18k Gold
* * SOLD * *
A Victorian era signet ring, modeled in 18k yellow gold, whose intaglio carved face features a cat rampant and the motto for the Scottish clan Macpherson. Our kitty's attitude is traditionally fierce; his paws are raised in a little rawr, and his tail twitches. Above this feline familiar, a scrolling banner holds the clan's motto: "touch not the cat bot a glove." In this instance, 'bot' means without, and the glove of a wildcat is the pad of its paw— if the cat is 'ungloved,' its claws are unsheathed. The motto is meant to serve as a warning that one should beware when the wildcat's claws are 'without a glove'. It is a reference to the historically violent nature of clan Macpherson, and it serves as a metaphorical warning to other clans that they should think twice before interfering with clan business.
This antique ring is the classic signet shape, with a low profile, and tapering shoulders. It is a solid cast and would have been used as a seal, originally. It is marked for Eidenburgh, for 18k purity, and for the year 1890. These old Macpherson cat pieces are rarely found.
