Poetic Victorian Era Japonisme Gold in Quartz Fan Pendant in 14k Gold
* * SOLD * *
A large antique pendant, belonging to the Aesthetic movement, that takes the form of a ladies fan, tied to (and laying atop) a curved section of bamboo. This fan is set with a large and especially fine gold in quartz specimen— quartz veins are the quintessential partner for gold in the wild, and gold-bearing-quartz was formed when pure, molten gold filled the naturally occurring fissures and cracks in quartz deposits. This beautiful, unusual material was very popular during the gold rush eras.
This pendant is also part of the Japonisme movement, which reflected the Influence of Japanese design and culture on the west, in the late 1800s. There is much to love here, and lots of interesting textural elements— the hand engraved floral details, the clever twisted wire that functions as the fan's cord, the engraved grain of the bamboo, and the bamboo leaves that drape languidly over the fan. This wears beautifully on a long weighty chain.
