1970s Greek Hinged Bracelet with Lounging Bull
Monumental in 18k Gold
* * SOLD * *
A monumental, 1970s, hinged bracelet, modeled in 18k yellow gold, across whose chunky half-round base a big, beautiful bull lounges. Our sweet beast is fully sculpted in three dimensions— he is sinewy, expressive, and muscular, but his posture is gentle. His underside is finished with a high polish, while his topside features fine, Florentine textures that recall a bull's smooth fur. This Florentine finish is continued on the cuff's "shank." We love this guy especially for his sweet face and for the graceful lines of his spine and tail. This is an impressive (and heavy) piece of work. Its hinged closure is formidably tight and springy, and it is reinforced by a figure-eight safety catch. The bull is an important and ancient symbol in Greece, where he is traditionally symbolic of the sun, and the power of light. We can't help but think (also) of King Minos, the white bull, the Minotaur, and his tragic origin story. This is a rare and wonderful object! It would be a great signature piece for a Taurus woman, or for anyone who identifies with the bull.
Marked 18k, Greece, with a "T," and with a pictorial mark inside an oval cartouche.
