Hatshepsut, and alongside this barely-smiling ruler, pairs of curvaceous asps. Three petaled lotus flowers decorate the picture-corner style tabs posted at the corners of the intaglio seal. This ring is beautifully made, weighty, crisp and genuinely rare. We love it for its bold, graphic presence, and for its undeniably mystical quality!

It is marked by the maker Mulligan, Wash DC, and with 14k for purity. It is further inscribed, in hand-engraved script, H.A.L. 1932. We interpret the seal's message as: "vigilance to the end."

If this

Hatshepsut likeness reminds you of the bust of a sphinx, that's not surprising! Many pharaohs had their heads carved atop sphinx "guardian statues" made for their tombs. One of Egypt's most famous Sphinxes is the

Hatshepsut Sphinx, which now lives at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, in New York.
