A striking Art Deco era signet ring, modeled in 14k yellow gold, whose elongated, octagonal face is set with an oval slab of lapis lazuli. This bezel-set lapis gem is a rich, evenly-saturated, medium-blue color, and it is heavily figured with splashy, golden, pyrite inclusions! A border of pierced rectangles and fleur de lis surround it, while a pair of dragons flank it, adorning the ring's shoulders. These fierce-looking dragons are posed like guardians, concealed in alcoves along a passageway! Their postures suggest that they are pressed to a wall, laying in wait, and the dragons are, themselves, flanked by pairs of torches. We love the highly-detailed, expressive carving here, the dragons' protective aspect and their beautiful spiral scales. This ring has a wide, fully-decorated shank that reads like a gathered sash. An applied patina darkens the ring's low relief ares and sets-off the fine details of its decor. This is marked 14 for 14k gold purity and with the Jones & Woodland Co. battleaxe. It is beautifully made!

Jones & Woodland Co. was based in Newark, New Jersey, a stronghold of fine jewelry carving around the turn of the 20th century. They created jewelry for Tiffany & Co., among other hgh profile brands. In 1938, they were purchased by Krementz.

Ring face measures approx 15.5 x 13.7; lapis gem measures approx 10.5 x 12.5 mm; ring shank measures approx 12.1 mm at the shoulder, and tapers to approx 4.2 mm at the base.
