Art Nouveau Laughing Mascaron Locket
in 14k Gold
* * SOLD * *
An unusual Art Nouveau era locket, modeled in 14k yellow gold, featuring a laughing, chimeric mascaron face, rendered in highly-detailed, die-struck repoussé. A mascaron is an architectural ornament, traditionally intended to frighten away evil spirits, to keep them from entering buildings. This mascaron smiles broadly beneath his leafy mustache; his eyes are fierce and cheerful— he is not afraid of anything! The locket's backside is engraved with initials D.L., in a loose Edwardian script. This locket is marked 14k for purity (on the interior); it is finished with a high-color bloom, and its condition is especially fine. We love this laughing mascaron! We see this locket as an amulet of protection.
