Taylor & Co. Arts & Crafts Moonstone Shield Stickpin in 14k Gold
* * SOLD * *
An antique stickpin, shaped like a triangular heater shield. The shield-shaped head is pierced, and each of its three corners is decorated with a plume-like epaulet. The centerpiece of this small artwork is a remarkably clear moonstone cabochon. Viewed from above this moonstone is colorless and water-clear; the adularescence is strong when the stone is turned in the light. This stickpin is beautifully made— I call it Lord of the Vale, because it reminds me of the terrible moon door in Game of Thrones, and of the elven court. These fanciful associations make sense when you consider the Arts & Crafts movement's love of Medieval themes. Marked 14k, and for the well-regarded Newark jeweler Taylor & Co.
Shield measures approx 15.4 x 11.9 mm. Moonstone measures approx 6.4 mm. Pin stem measures 56.4 mm (approx 2 1/4").
