Ostby Barton Egyptian Revival Bloodstone Scarab Ring in 10K Gold
* * SOLD * *
A charming antique ring, made in 10k yellow gold, and set with a bloodstone gem, carved in the likeness of a scarab beetle. This ring dates to the 1920s. Made by Ostby & Barton, when interest in ancient Egypt was enlivened by the excavations of tombs in The Valley of the Kings, its shoulders are decorated with a dimensional scroll design, and the half round shank tapers toward the base. This bloodstone material is interesting and somewhat unusual because its figure includes a spattering of translucent white agate— because of this it has a mottled appearance and a lovely glassy sheen. This scarab carving has an inscription on the reverse that is unlike the usual pictographic carvings.
