Onyx & Foiled Rose Cut Diamond Mourning Brooch
* * SOLD * *
A large early Victorian mourning brooch, made with a thick, high-polish disc of black onyx, and set with a rose cut diamond. This diamond is foil-backed and set in a clever, conical silver seat, that allows it to hang perfectly in a tall, gold, many-prong setting— it has the lovely, irregular facets that give these old rose-cuts their disarming, mirror-like sparkle. The onyx is shallowed slightly, where the prong setting is mounted. The onyx itself is mounted on a heavy circle of flat gold, to which the original hinge, pin-stem and curly c-clasp are attached. This flat-back diamond is approx 1/2 carat, but faces up like an 80 point stone. Metal is 14k yellow gold. A striking, minimalist jewel that will wear well on a heavy scarf or lapel.
