Georgian Enamel Forget Me Not Mourning Band in 18k Gold
* * SOLD * *
A rare and wonderful antique Georgian mourning band, made in 18k gold. This unusual band is wide, with a raised scroll-and-dot border that creates a frame-like design around the ring— this scrolling is enameled in black. Finely hand-pierced letters, in old english script, spell out the sentiment 'in memory of,' inside the recessed area the black border frames. The centerpiece of the band is an enameled plaque, decorated with light blue forget-me-not flowers, one in bloom and one in bud. A removable hair compartment (empty) hides inside the ring, beneath this lovely plaque. This ring is fully hallmarked for London, the year 1821, for 18k gold, and with the maker's monogram: JD. It is also inscribed for the departed: James Grant born 4 May 1804, died 23rd August 1821. I especially love the diagonal line texture, beneath the letters, in the recessed area of the band.
US 9 3/4. Wide band fits half a size smaller, like a 9 1/4.
Ring measures approx 10.2 mm wide. Gauge (thickness) is approx 1.25 mm. Plaque centerpiece measures approx 7.75 x 5.75 mm.
