Chinese Kingfisher Feather Carp & Lotus Flower Earrings in Gilt Silver
* * SOLD * *
A wonderful pair of antique Chinese gilt-silver earrings, each modeled as a carp suspended from a lotus blossom. These fish are fully articulated; they move in a realistic, undulating fashion thanks to the small pins that hold together the sections of the animal's body. The carp and the lotus flowers are carefully inlaid with kingfisher feathers (an art that has long been abandoned)— the vibrant sky blue feathers flash with electric teal and lavender iridescence. These earrings are in remarkable condition; they are among the cleanest, most complete kingfisher jewels I've seen. The feathers that adorn the fish's mouths are colored bright red. The fish tails spread open like ribbons at the base of the design. Screw backs. Unmarked; not made for export.
c. 1900 - 1910
Excellent. Exceptionally clean and complete. There is a tiny bit of feather loss on one of the smallest, lowest chambers on the backside of one of the carp.
Measures approx 60.3 mm long x 17.2 mm wide (measured at the widest point of the lotus flower).
