Antique Russian Miniature Egg Pendant - Engraved Tendrils
* * SOLD * *
A lovely, Imperial Russian miniature egg pendant, made around the turn of the 20th century. This egg-shaped pendant is made in 56 zolotnik gold and is hand engraved with delicate curling tendrils. These tendrils likely symbolize rebirth, and new life, as these eggs were traditionally given as gifts during eastertide. This pendant's original suspension loop has been lost, and with it the marks that would identify its maker; the particular alloy of gold is correct for the period and matches the other (marked) eggs in this collection.

This little egg was part of a family collection, originating in St. Petersburg, and passed down from a great-grandmother to her female grandchildren. Each of these eggs, which were originally given as gifts during eastertide, was sewn into this woman's garments when her family fled to Finland, to escape the violence of the Russian Revolution.
