Antique Russian Miniature Egg Pendant - Demantoid Garnet & Ruby Spirals
* * SOLD * *
A lovely, Imperial Russian miniature egg pendant, made around the turn of the 20th century. This egg-shaped pendant is modeled in 56 zolotnik gold, and is decorated with a repeating double-spiral decor. These charming spirals are set with old cut demantiod garnets and rubies. The spiral is an ancient and far-reaching spiritual symbol, so perhaps these symbolize rebirth and the cyclical nature of life, as these little jewels were traditionally given as gifts during eastertide. This egg's primary loop is marked 56, for 56 zolotnik gold, and with the Fabergé workmaster's initials AK. Initials are clear, but are struck partly off the loop.
56 Zolotnik Gold (14k)
c. 1890 - 1900
Length without suspension ring approx 14.5 mm; width is approx 9.6 mm.
This little egg was part of a family collection, originating in St. Petersburg, and passed down from a great-grandmother to her female grandchildren. Each of these eggs, which were originally given as gifts during eastertide, was sewn into this woman's garments when her family fled to Finland, to escape the violence of the Russian Revolution.
