Antique Riker Bros Ornate Dolphin Brooch in 14k Gold
* * SOLD * *
An intricately carved antique watch pin, modeled as a dolphin, framed by scrolling ribbons and garlands of seaweed. Our dolphin friend has a tiny cabochon ruby eye; he's posed over a halved oyster shell, that holds a small natural pearl. This brooch is marked for the well known jewelers Riker Bros. The carving is very fine and the subject especially sweet. It has a c-clasp and a small loop fitting from which you might suspend a small watch, locket, or charm.
Dolphins symbolized swiftness, charity, and love to the Victorians; they would have been especially meaningful to seafaring people, and to those who lived and worked near the sea.
Measures approx 29.8 mm x 24 mm. Pearl measures approx 3.2 mm. Ruby eye measures approx 1 mm. Weight is 6.67 grams.
