Antique Framed Botanical Canatille Drop Earrings in 14k Gold
* * SOLD * *
A pair of Victorian-era drop earrings, made in 14k yellow gold, which has been "bloomed" to create a vibrant, high-color surface effect. These earrings resemble an ornate picture frame, with delicate, canatille wirework creating the scrolling edge. The framed subjects are intricately-made, hand-tied bouquets of berries and foliage, that rest on a high-polished, oval base— these plants are perhaps St. Johns Wort, rendered in both green and yellow gold; the berries are small, natural, white pearls. St.John's wort represents suspicion in the Victorian language of flowers— perhaps a woman with a skeptical, questioning mind will find that bit of information endearing . . . we certainly do! These earrings are short drops, with French wires and a c-shaped catch.
c. 1890 - 1900
Measures approx 29.3 mm x 10.5 mm, including earwires; pearls average approx 2.6 mm. These earrings are lightweight.
