1960s Naturalist Dreamscape Star Garnet Cocktail Ring in 14k Gold
* * SOLD * *
A boldly imaginative 1960s cocktail ring, whose carved, figural mount holds a large, high-dome, star garnet cabochon. This 14k gold mount is expressively carved with asymmetrical, curling leaves, branches and berries. On one of the ring's shoulders you can see the figure of a woman clinging to this foliage. She almost seems a part of the landscape. These leaves and other forms serve as prongs that hold the garnet centerpiece in place. This star garnet was almost almost certainly mined in Idaho, USA— it's color is a rich plum, presenting nearly black in low light, and it has six, well-defined rays, where most specimens have only four. Star garnet is quite rare, and six-rayed star garnets are rarer still. This is a unique and soulful jewel, which recalls the Art Nouveau period— to us it reads like a dreamscape.
