TERMINOLOGY . . .
VALUATION: A "valuation" or evaluation is any statement of value or offer made by an industry professional, and all valuations will be considerate of the materials used to create a piece of jewelry. Valuations will vary from buyer to buyer. These offers are not appraisals, they are real world representations of what you can sell a piece of jewelry for at a given moment.
APPRAISAL : An "appraisal" is a legal document prepared by an industry professional. Appraisals are sometimes provided with the purchase of a piece of jewelry, but they are never free. An individual might require an appraisal if they want to insure a piece of jewelry against loss; an estate might require an appraisal of goods it needs to liquidate and distribute equitably among heirs. An appraisal will provide you with a "replacement cost," for a piece of jewelry in the event that you might lose it and need to replace it. You do not need an appraisal to sell a piece of jewelry, and "replacement value" is not the same as resale value or even retail value.
MELT: "Melt" is 100% of your gold's value. When professional gold buyers take jewelry to melt (verb) they do not recover the full melt value, only a large percentage of it.
SCRAP: "Scrap" is a percentage of melt, offered by professionals who buy gold. Scrap value varies from buyer to buyer, and is based on the current value of pure gold, which changes by the minute according to the world market.
VINTAGE: within the United States the description "vintage" can refer to anything made between the 1970s and the 1930s (sorry if that makes you vintage!).
ANTIQUE: within the United States the description "antique" is usually used to refer to something made in the 1920s or earlier, but, frequently, the 1930s get included in this group also. European countries tend to skew older, since the US is a relatively young country.
