Gerardo Lopez Winged Heart Repoussé Pectoral Necklace
* * SOLD * *
A striking pectoral necklace by the Mexican silversmith Gerardo Lopez. This necklace is weighty and has a wonderful presence on the neck. The central motif is a winged or feathered heart, made with intricate scrollwork and curling tails. The pieces that flank the heart also give the impression of pairs of wings, and all three plaques hold a navette-shaped, silver gem. The nine links that finish the necklace are smaller, scrolling plumes.
This neck-piece is an early example of Lopez's work, and one of prettiest I've seen. Its design is intricate, but the proportions make it versatile and easy to wear. It lays beautifully on the neck. The finishing on this necklace is immaculate. Original patina is nearly black. Marked 980, for high purity silver, with Gerardo Lopez's mark, Lopez / Taxco in a circle divided by two stars (1948-1950), and eagle 23 (delineated).
