Ornate Victorian Enamel Portrait Drop Earrings in 18k Gold
* * SOLD * *
A pair of antique, Victorian-era earrings, made in 18k yellow gold and ornately hand-engraved with curling banners and fronds. The centerpiece of each coin-shaped earring is a very small miniature portrait of a lady in period dress, painted on a ruby glass plaque— these coy belles (one wearing her hair elaborately coifed and the other smiling shyly from beneath a tilted hat) are hand painted in enamel, and the detail at this small scale is remarkable. The ruby glass plaques are bezel set; they are rectangular, with nipped corners, and a concave oval plane at center. These earrings are large but comfortable; they have always been earrings, but the wires are newly replaced.
