Black Basalt Mourning Pendant with Diamond Set Monogram in 14k
* * SOLD * *
A large, custom made, late-Georgian/early-Victorian mourning locket with a face of Wedgwood black basalt. This material is very black, truly matte, and subtly porus, like unglazed ceramics. The face is decorated with an elaborate 14k flat-wire monogram, that is embellished with clusters of glinty, rose-cut diamonds. The locket's reverse is a heavy circular mount of 14k gold, encircling a ring of black enamel, encircling a notched ring of gold. A lock of pale blond hair rests under crystal in the central circle. This locket is fitted with both a hinged bail and a pin back. The c-catch is a broad flat ribbon. This is especially fine metalwork— bold, elegant, and precise. Monogram reads SRS.
14k gold, Wedgwood black basalt, diamond, human hair, crystal
Measures approx 36 mm in diameter, and approx 6.5 mm thick. Diamonds range from 2 mm - .5 mm.
The base material of the locket's face is matte-black, Wedgwood-style ceramic. It is not possible to see if there is a Wedgwood mark on the underside, because of the construction of the locket.
